The SS President Taylor was the first troopship lost in World War II, going aground on Canton Island in the Pacific in February 1942. On board were 1250 troops who were to garrison the island. The commander of the accompanying destroyer advised the troopship captain to hug the shore because Japanese submarines might be in the area.
