Shipwrecks of Lake Ontario - A Journey of Discovery

Speaker and shipwreck explorer Jim Kennard will be presenting from 1-3pm at the Community Center located at 159 Bay St. Sodus Point, NY

The presentation is a personal and historic exploration of some of the most important shipwrecks discovered in Lake Ontario by Kennard’s team and shipwreck peers as he takes the audience on a 50-year journey of shipwreck exploration. Their finds include the two oldest shipwrecks discovered in the Great Lakes: The British warship Ontario (1780) and the sloop Washington, lost in 1803.

His book Shipwrecks of Lake Ontario – A Journey of Discovery and the ground-breaking book Legend of the Lake, the story of the British warship Ontario will be available for purchase as part of the program.

HMS Ontario, a British warship built in 1780 has been discovered in deep water off the southern shore of Lake Ontario. Shipwreck enthusiasts Jim Kennard and Dan Scoville located the ship utilizing sophisticated side scanning sonar and an underwater remote operated vehicle. HMS Ontario is the oldest confirmed shipwreck and the only fully intact British warship to have ever been found in the Great Lakes.  more »
