How many ships were wrecked on the five Great Lakes; excluding St. Lawrence River.

I am preparing a talk on history of great lakes shipping and just want a reasonably accurate number to quote on what historians believe about Great Lakes ship wrecks.

Many Great Lakes historicans believe that around 8000 ships have wrecked in the Great Lakes. However, these ships don't all exist today. Some burned, wrecked near shore or at the pier, and others that sank and were raised and put back into service or removed.
