What were schooners created to do?

What were schooners mainly used for?

Schooners were essentially the trucks of 100 to 150 years ago. They carried our commodities such as lumber, coal, grain, fruit, salt for preservation of food, and much more. All those items that are now carried by truck or train. The water ways were our highways back in the 1800's .
